Application Letter Draft 2

Application for Internship

I am writing to enquire whether there are any internship opportunities in DesignworksUSA Singapore studio. I am currently a year three Mechanical Engineering student with a specialisation in Automotive Engineering.

From the resume attached you will see that I have held key leadership roles from secondary school all the way to my national service days. I have a good sense of responsibility and have been proven worthy of tasks assigned to me thus far. Another key trait I possess is being sociable and positive. Therefore, not only do I enjoy working as a team, I bring about a positive working experience to my colleagues.

I am currently working on a project of designing a Velomobile (electronic assisted personal transport system). I am in the team responsible for the mechanical drive as well as electrical systems of the Velomobile. I have developed the skills of design and research and also acquired considerable knowledge in this field through the project. At the same time I have also gained hands on experiences of putting the electrical systems together and learnt to work within constraints.

My passion for automobiles have made me chose Automotive Engineering as my specialisation in university. In my past time I would also read articles and watch programmes which are related to cars. The complexities of a modern day automobile never fail to fascinate me.

I would be able to start my internship from the 10th of May until the end of July. I am willing to take up any internship opportunity as it would broaden my horizons in this field.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  1. Hey See Chai,

Correct me if I'm wrong but this post looks exactly like the first draft? Maybe you uploaded the wrong file?

Also, maybe you could explain more about the key leadership roles you have taken on and link it back to how its going to help you during the internship.

I did enjoy the portion about your project designing a velomobile. I felt that it ties in very well with the desire to learn more at the company and it shows your passion about what you do.

    Hope this helps :)

  2. Yup the velomobile paragraph is good =) However, I don't see a clear link why do you want to do an internship specifically at this company.

Also, in para 2, you may want to put in some qualities that can be substantiated. Currently the paragraph seems 'weak', in the sense that sociable and positive can't really be proven with your resume. But I am not suggesting you leave them out...keep them and and write more..probably on your leadership roles?

    Cheers

  4. Maybe you could change the first sentence to "I am writing to enquire of any internship opportunities available at DesignworksUSA Singapore studio" - sounds better doesn't it?

Also - "My passion for automobiles have made me chose Automotive "
---> "My passion for automobiles HAS made" because passion is singular.

And I agree with Iris, talk more about the positions you've held in your CCAs so that you can relate that to the skills that you know are required of you at a workplace like DesignworksUSA Singapore studio.

    Hope this helps!

  5. Hi See Chai,
I think in the 3rd paragraph, “I have developed the …” should be “ I have developing…” since you have not finished the project yet.
I also like your Velomobile paragraph. I think the overall approach is relevant to enquire for an internship.
    Just my two cents.

  6. Hello See Chai,

Overall, I think your writing aproach and tone is refreshing ,quite different from the other resumes which I have read. I can sense that you are really passionate about automobile and that is good because you want your employer to know that you are loving this job. However, I wish you could describe more about your project. It would be interesting to Designworks USA.

Just one more thing, quite a number of your sentences start with "I"....maybe you could vary a little.

Other than that, I think your application letter will stand out if you could elaborate more about your experiences and highlight the reasons as to why DesignWorks USA should employ you.

Hope to see you "Zoom-zoom-zoom-ing" and "brooming" off with success in your career. Bonne chance! ;)
